How to Pay in India โ Travel Money Guide
India has undergone a digital payments revolution โ UPI is used everywhere, but you'll need cash INR for rural areas, autos, and small street vendors.
How Much Do You Lose on FX Fees in India?
Most travelers silently pay 3โ6% more than the fair exchange rate every time they pay by card or withdraw from an ATM abroad. The cost comes from two sources stacked on top of each other:
- โ Foreign transaction fee โ charged by your card issuer (typically 2.5โ3.5% for a standard bank card).
- โกExchange rate spread โ the gap between the mid-market rate and what Visa/Mastercard charge (typically 0.5โ1.5%).
- โขWhat is DCC and why should you avoid it? โ an optional trap where the merchant converts to your home currency at a rate 3โ8% worse. Always decline.

Best Way to Pay in India
โ Recommended:
Cash (INR) + card for urban shops and restaurants
Card tip: Visa and Mastercard with low FX fees work well in urban India. A no-fee card (Wise, Revolut) is ideal โ India's 2.5% bank surcharge adds up on longer trips.
Local Payment Apps
What locals use โ and whether tourists can too
PhonePe / Google Pay / Paytm
UPI-based apps dominate India โ require an Indian bank account. As a tourist, you can only use them via card-linked international mode.
Razorpay
โ Tourist-friendlyUsed by many tourist-facing online bookings โ accepts foreign cards.
Always Decline DCC
DCC = Dynamic Currency Conversion
When a merchant or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency instead of INR โ always decline. The merchant's rate is typically 3โ8% worse than your card network's rate.
โ Always pay in INR โ not your home currency.
DCC is less structured in India but some hotel and restaurant terminals may attempt to charge in your home currency. Confirm payment is in INR before approving.
