How to Pay in Japan โ€” International Traveler's Guide

Japan is still a cash-heavy society โ€” carry JPY alongside your credit card.

๐Ÿ’ณ

Going to Japan โ€” Best card to use?

Recommendation

Choose a credit card with low foreign transaction fees. KBank or TTB Flash Card (some variants) have zero overseas fees.

Best payment method: Cash JPY + low-fee credit card

Hidden fees when paying abroad

Fee

FX Fee (Foreign Transaction Fee)

Fee your bank charges for foreign card use โ€” typically 1.5%โ€“2.5% of the transaction.

Fee

Spread

The gap between mid-market rate and the rate your bank actually gives โ€” usually 0.5%โ€“2%.

Fee

ATM Fee

Withdrawal fees from both your home bank and the local ATM โ€” combined can reach $5โ€“$10 per transaction.

Fee

DCC Markup

Extra markup when you choose to pay in your home currency โ€” often 3%โ€“10% above the true market rate.

โš ๏ธ

What is DCC and why should you avoid it?

DCC = Dynamic Currency Conversion

This is when a merchant or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency instead of the local currency. It sounds convenient, but the exchange rate is set by the merchant โ€” which is typically 3%โ€“10% worse than the true market rate.

โœ‹ Always decline DCC โ€” pay in JPY only

When swiping your card in Japan, always choose JPY. Never select another currency even if offered.
